Instructions from Saint Seraphim of Sarov on Acquiring the Holy Spirit. Please Click the file on the left to read or download.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church (part of the Eastern Rite). Pope Francis seeks to unify the Western (Roman) rite of the church with the Eastern rite so that the Church can, in his words, “breath with both lungs”.

Saint Seraphim was a Russian monk and mystic who received the high honorific title of starets (meaning in Russian, spiritual teacher). St. Seraphim has much to show us about acquiring the Holy Spirit.

Born to a middle class family in 1754, he was originally named Prokhor Moshnin, changing it to Seraphim upon entering a monastery at Sarov Russia in 1777. Ordained in 1793, he soon embarked upon a solitary life.

He once more entered the world owing to a mystical vision which he attributed to the Virgin Mary. He soon attracted disciples and followers who came from far and wide to receive his counsel and to partake of his spiritual program of contemplative prayer, monastic-like austerities, and rigorous self-discipline. He passed away in 1833. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized him in 1913, and his teachings have been the source of many books, making him well known in the Western Churches
